Playing Thurgoona you immediately realise that it is an extremely well designed golf course. The large slightly undulating greens are a feature here. As well as the strategically designed fairways. Water does come into play on some holes. The bunkering here is also well thought out.
Playing of the back tees this course will challenge the finest golfer. No wonder the NSW Senior Open has been played here. The course is highly regarded amongst professionals. Peter Senior has been quoted to say “You can’t fault this course or the way it’s prepared. It’s just a great golf course…”. While Ian Baker-Finch is very impressed with the greens and said “They’re 9½ out of 10, not quite a 10 out of 10 because you’ve got to go Royal Melbourne or Kingston Heath…They’re right up there with the best in the world”.
There are so many great golf holes to play at Thurgoona. One of our favourites is the 367m par 4 13th hole. This tree lined fairway has a dogleg to the left so an accurate drive here is required. There are also two rather large bunkers guarding the right hand side of the green. This is a challenging hole for most of us right handed golfers who have a tendency to slice the golf ball. But the reward of playing this hole well is very satisfying.
This course is a real gem and still relatively unknown to the wider golfing world.
